National Cancer Prevention Month

February is known as National Cancer Prevention Month, which aims to raise awareness about the various ways that individuals can take steps to prevent cancer. While cancer is a complex and multifactorial disease, there are certain lifestyle choices that can increase or decrease the risk of developing cancer. One such lifestyle choice is physical activity.

Numerous studies have shown that staying active can help prevent cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week to reduce the risk of several types of cancer, including breast, colon, endometrial, and prostate cancer.

How does physical activity prevent cancer?

There are several ways that physical activity can help prevent cancer:

  1. Maintaining a healthy weight: Regular physical activity can help individuals maintain a healthy weight or lose excess weight. Obesity is a known risk factor for several types of cancer, including breast, colon, endometrial, kidney, liver, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancer.
  2. Reducing inflammation: Chronic inflammation is associated with an increased risk of cancer. Physical activity can help reduce inflammation in the body, which can lower the risk of cancer.
  3. Regulating hormones: Physical activity can help regulate hormones such as estrogen and insulin, which are associated with an increased risk of certain types of cancer.
  4. Improving immune function: Regular physical activity can boost the immune system, helping the body to fight off cancer cells and prevent the development of cancer.

What types of physical activity are best?

Any type of physical activity is better than none, but some types of activity may be more beneficial for cancer prevention than others. Examples of moderate-intensity activity include brisk walking, cycling, dancing, and swimming. Examples of vigorous-intensity activity include running, aerobics, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT).

In addition to aerobic activity, strength training exercises can also be beneficial for cancer prevention. Strength training can help maintain muscle mass and bone density, which can decrease the risk of falls and fractures. It can also improve overall physical function, which can help individuals maintain their independence as they age.
